Physics Lab 2.12 Solar Radiation

Overview
The purpose of this laboratory class is to measure the effect of surface color on the rate of absorption of solar energy. We also investigate the use of a transparent cover to to improve the efficiency of heat collection by a solar water heater.

Experiment 2.12.1 Solar Radiation
Place 3 soda bottles filled with water in the sun for a few hours. Paint the surfaces of the bottles with different paints and observe the effect that surface texture and color has on the temperature of the water in the bottle.

Equipment
Plastic bottles
Paint
Thermometer

Experiment 2.12.2 Solar Water Heater
Place a dark colored bottle in a wooden enclosure with a transparent cover. Investigate the effect of insulating and covering the bottle.

Equipment
Plastic bottle
Wooden box
Clear plastic sheet / glass
Thermometer
